A poem written by my husband

my husband wrote this for our dog that passed away of 28th May

I am still here Bestest Dad

I jumped up on your bed last night I came to have a peep
I could see that you were crying you found it hard to sleep.
I licked your face so gently as you brushed away a tear,
It's me, Shorty, I haven't left you I am still right here.
I was close to you at breakfast, and I could plainly see,
You were thinking of the many times you got cold meat out for me.
I was with you at your work today your knees were getting sore
I wanted to help you bestest Dad, I wished I could do more.
I was with you tonight as well when you walked along the river
And I know for sure some day, we will walk and play for ever.
I ran with you towards the house, and as you reached for your key.
I gently put my paw on you and woofed to say "It’s me."
You looked so very tired, as you sank into your chair.
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be close by you every single day.
To say to you my bestest Dad "I never went away."
You sat there very still then smiled, and I think you knew
That in the quietness of a night I am very close to you.
Another day is over and I nudge you as you are yawning
And then I woof you a goodnight, I will see you in the morning.
And when the time is right for you to cross the short divide,
I'll rush across to meet you and we'll stand side by side
I have so many things to show you Dad, there is so much for you to see.
Till then you live your life with Mum, and then come home to me.
