My ivillage career advise "interview"

When the children were young I made my money with the easy of option of child-minding, (back in the day all you needed was common sense, an empathy to do what you were doing and a very thorough check by the social work including your police checks.)Throw in a bit of crèche work and add playgroup leader, volunteer in an urban aid funded project that included treasurer, play scheme worker, cook for the old folks and anything else needing done,  clerk to the school board, beaver volunteer and  you pretty much have a picture of me.

I followed a link in an e-mail from ivillage here and from there found this. Believe me its more than a few years since I had a career thought, well 10 yrs a go to be precise when I decided to go to college and get a piece of paper that said i could do something to enhance my job prospects. I was at a point where all the kids were either in secondary school or left school and working.

At that point wasn't sure which route to take....child care? I didnt like the path it was taking with cant do this with kids, cant do that with the kids, must have a curriculum even for one of 6 weeks old you were going to have whilst his parents attended a 12week course one hr a week  or expand on my office sjills, had been using a computer for 5 or 6 yrs could keep books and do tax and NI returns by hand, but no paperwork to enhance my chances of finding a paying job.

Actually ended up going to do a HND in business and information management and loved the learning that much I carried on and added a BA in Human Resource Management.....and now work as a cleaner....say no more.

So here are the results of my "job role interview" and you will note amongst them is a Human Resource Manager, so my time at uni wasnt wasted!! Right now if funds permitted and I thought there was any chance of a job I would love to go and get a Social Work degree and work with the elderly and their families

This description is a generalisation. If it rings true, you've found your career type.
You would most enjoy a career that allows you to meet new people. You would also be happiest in a career that allows you to be free and flexible, and allows you to be extremely creative. Some careers that would be perfect for you are:

  • Stockbroker
  • Secretary
  • Receptionist
  • Director
  • Recruitment Consultant
  • Politician
  • Marketing
  • Human Resources Manager
  • Religious Minister
  • Teacher
  • Lawyer
  • Advertising
  • Consultant
  • Financial Adviser
  • Financial Planner
  • GP
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Public Relations
  • Estate Agent
  • Travel Agent
  • Restauranteur/Hotel Manager
  • Events Organiser

You are a great leader. You genuinely enjoy being around other people. Your relationships with others are very important to you. You love talking and meeting new people. You are very enthusiastic about work and about all that you do and have in your life. You love being the focus of attention. You enjoy a fast pace. You are very socially oriented. Therefore, you are much happier being with others than you are alone. You crave interaction with others.

You are very spontaneous and often act before you think. You are always quick to answer when you are asked a question, even if you aren't sure of the answer. It is easier for you to improvise as you go along. You enjoy thinking out loud, and are most creative when brainstorming with friends or colleagues. You enjoy being involved in many activities.

You are very easy to read, and often wear your heart on your sleeve. You are never afraid to tell people what you think. You are very empathetic and genuine. You can sometimes be seen as over-emotional or too involved by others. But that is only because you tend to get so involved in the things you do that they become personal. You want to be adored, loved and appreciated. You like to please others and to make sure people are happy.

You trust your gut instincts. You are easily inspired and trust that inspiration. You are very innovative. You analyse things by looking at the big picture. You are concerned about how what you do affects others. You worry about your actions and the future. You tend to use a lot of metaphors and are very descriptive and colourful in your choice of language.

You are very creative, and get bored easily if you don't get to express yourself. You like to learn new things. You don't like the same old routine. You like to leave your options open.

Finding a career that is right for you isn't always an easy thing. However, if you secure a job that is suited to your personality type you will enjoy going to work, feel great about yourself, feel appreciated and look forward to what's ahead.
This test was adapted from C. G. Jung's famous personality types.

Why not go have fun and see what your future may hold., come back and let me know.

  1. How interesting. I followed the link, filled in the questions and came up with exactly the same description as you did! I am a Director working in education and my training is as a Careers Adviser, not that that career features. Over the years I've completed lots of psychometric tests and come out with similar results. If you want to be a Social Worker, I would suggest you start by contacting your local authority and find out if there are any routes in where you would not have to study full time. There is a lack of social workers especially working with the elderly, so it may be that they have a route in that is funded. Obviously, the economic climate isn't good for this right now, but speaking to someone at your council social work dept will also give you information about the type of work experience they are looking for. Good Luck!
